Summary: Bradley (Jefferson’s Sons) examines WWII through the eyes of a disabled child eager to escape her life of neglect and abuse. With the threat of German bombs being dropped on London, most parents are anxious to get their children out of the city. But Ada’s mother, shamed by her daughter’s deformed foot, doesn’t seem to care. Ada takes it upon herself to board an evacuee train with her younger brother and, without their Mam’s knowledge, they arrive in a country village with a crowd of students. Malnourished and filthy, the siblings are placed with Miss Smith, a woman lacking any experience with children, who claims she isn’t “nice.” Nonetheless, she offers Ada and Jamie food, clothing, and security, and she owns a pony that Ada is determined to learn to ride. In this poignant story, Bradley celebrates Ada’s discovery of the world outside her dismal flat, movingly tracing her growing trust of strangers and her growing affection for Miss Smith. Proving that her courage and compassion carry far more power than her disability, Ada earns self-respect, emerges a hero, and learns the meaning of home.

This book has received no major awards.  This story is based on true events that took place near the Nashua River In Massachusetts. The book is about a group of Native Americans who decided to settle on the River for a better life with food, shelter, and of course, the river's fresh water. This was all ruined when white settlers came a long and polluted the River as new machines in an industrial revolution came in place. Because of this, wildlife deteriorated. Soon, people around started to notice the damage done and signed petitions while speaking to politicians to get change done. Once people started working hard to get the Nashua back to life, it finally but slowly became clean to the point where all the wildlife came back to dwell near it again. The Alaska Mother Goose

  Written by Shelley Gill and illustrated by Shannon Cartwright, The Alaska Mother Goose  is a collection of nursery rhymes that are illustrated and age appropriate for kids aged 3-7. This book contains the usual Mother Goose rhymes that we usually hear, but the author adds a cultural twist to it that is more of a northern and Alaskan style. From Hey Diddle Diddle to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Gill adds her own alternate variations in these nursery rhymes. The singsong collection includes animals and plants that inhabit Alaska and also includes a glossary at the back that includes the types of species there and describes how they live. I would use this book in the classroom because it adds a little bit of diversity and my students can learn educational things about the Alaskan life through this collection. The appropriate grades to use this book would be pre k- 2nd grade. For my 2nd graders, I would first read to them the original version of Mother Goose and have my students...

A timid little Mouse came upon him unexpectedly, and in her fright, ran across Lion’s nose. Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature. The Mouse begged to let him go and someday I will surely repay. The Lion was much amused to think that a Mouse could ever help him. But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.  Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter’s net. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring. The Mouse knew the voice and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net.
